ภาพยนตร์เรื่อง All Quiet on the Western Front นี้ดัดแปลงมาจากหนังสือชื่อ “Im Western Nichts Neues” ที่แต่งโดย Erich Maria Remarque Remarque ชาวเยอรมันที่ถูกเรียกตัวให้เป็นเกณฑ์ทหารในสงครามโลกครั้งที่ 1 เมื่อปี 1916 และจากการไปร่วมรบในครั้งนั้นทำเขาได้รับบาดเจ็บอย่า งมาก 10 ปีต่อมาเมื่อสงครามโลกสิ้นสุดลง เขาได้เขียนหนังสือเล่มดังกล่าว หนึ่งปีให้หลังหนังสือของเขาก็ได้ถูกแปลให้เป็นภาษาอังกฤษโดยใช้ชื่อว่า “All Quiet on the Western Front” ซึ่งเป็นชื่อเดียวกันกับภาพยนตร์ที่จัดทำขึ้นโดยอาศัยโครงเรื่องจากหนังสือเล่มนี้ในปี 1930 ภาพยนตร์เรื่องนี้มีเนื้อเรื่องเกี่ยวกับชีวิตจริงของทหารเยอรมันระหว่างสงครามโลกครั้งที่ 1 โดยจำลองสถานการณ์ให้ผู้ชมเห็นถึงสภาพชีวิตอันโหดร้ายของทหารเยอรมันที่ออกไปรบในแนวหน้าอย่างสมจริง เพื่อต้องการให้ผู้ชมได้ตระหนักถึงสิ่งที่สงครามนำมาให้ ว่านอกจากจะเป็นทางออกที่ใช้ไม่ได้ในการแก้ไขความขัดแย้งแล้วยังเป็นการส่งเยาวชน อนาคตของชาติให้ไปจบชีวิตอย่างน่าอดสูและเปล่าประโยชน์อีกด้วย หนังสือและภาพยนตร์เรื่องนี้ต้องการจะสื่อถึงแนวคิด “ต่อต้านสงคราม” เนื่องจาก “All Quiet on the Western Front” เป็นภาพยนตร์ที่นำเสนอชีวิตจริงของทหารเยอรมันในสนามรบได้อย่างไม่บิดเบือน และใกล้เคียงกับความเป็นจริงที่เกิดขึ้นในสงครามโลกครั้งที่ 1 มากที่สุด จึงได้รับรางวัล Academy Award For Best Picture ในปี 1930 นอกจากนี้ภาพยนตร์เรื่องนี้ยังได้รับคำวิจารณ์ที่ดีจากผู้ชมทั่วโลกว่าเป็นภาพยนตร์เกี่ยวกับสงครามโลกครั้งที่ 1 ที่สมบูรณ์มากที่สุด และยังใช้เป็นสื่อการสอนในโรงเรียนหลายแห่งทั่วโลกอีกด้วย
